326 1st Avenue North
256-358-4536

Munford Baptist Church was organized January 18, 1874 with seventeen charter members. The church met monthly on the "Second Sabbath" unless hindered by sever weather. Before the end of 1874 the church had a total membership of 44 and reported eight baptisms and gifts to missions of $2.50. The building was destroyed by a tornado in 1912. The second building was constructed in 1914 and was used until 1965. Worship was held only once a until 1939 when the church began having services on the second and fourth Sundays. In 1939 the church membership totaled 181 with an average Sunday School attendance of 57. In 1950 the church voted to become a "full time" church, with James Clark the first full time pastor. A new building was constructed in 1965 to become the third meeting house for the congregation. In 1974 the church reported a total membership of 402 with 23 baptisms and gifts to missions of over $5,000. The beautiful building was destroyed by fire on Christmas Day, 1985.

After the Christmas Day fire the church met for a short time in a high school gymnasium but soon secured a mobile chapel from the Alabama Baptist State Convention. Soon other trailers were rented to use as educational space and plans were under way for construction of a new building. For the construction, the church was very fortunate to have the assistance of carpenters, including five members of the ongregation, who gave themselves untiringly for eighteen months until the beautiful modern building was completed. A fellowship hall was the first constructed and was used for worship space while the rest of the church plan was under construction. Using approximately $175,000 insurance money and the generous contributions of the church members and other churches, the new building was dedicated on December 27, 1987 debt free.
