History

The Playhouse is an ideal home for On Stage. Tucked in the Historic District of Monroe on High School Avenue, the Playhouse began its life as a Primitive Baptist Church. Built in 1909, at a cost of $1,700, the structure next served as a classroom, then a 1970's Coffee House for teens, a courtroom and now a theatre. A plaque, mounted on the wall inside, provides information about the building's history.

In 2006, On Stage found the bell that once hung in the belfry of the old church and placed it in front of the building. A bronze marker tells the story of the bell that came home.

Over the years On Stage, in partnership with the City of Monroe, has helped maintain the building. Now On Stage is underwriting an extensive interior renovation. Phase I, completed to kick off our 38th season, includes a new paint job, the expose, refurbished original tin ceiling, recessed and sconce lighting and other improvements. Phase II will bring new carpet and new theatre seating.

The Playhouse will welcome On Stage audiences for years to come.
