Park United Methodist Church

On Sunday, March 4, 1894, the Reverand Joseph Dennis and the Methodist congregation of Coudersport held a special service to dedicate their new church building on 3rd Street. After the dedication everyone was invited to the church dining room for dinner, which cost twenty-five cents. During the early 1890s most of the nation was in financial trouble. There was widespread unemployment and many banks had failed, but business was better in Potter County where Pennsylvania's largest sawmills were hard at work, the population was growing and more railroads were connecting the outlying towns. Architects L.B. Balk & Son of Brooklyn, New York, had designed a new church building. A larger lot was bought west of the original church. The Building Committee sold subscriptions during 1892, and after $6,500 was raised by spring construction was begun by an Emporium contractor named Sweitzer.

The cornerstone was layed in August 1893, and the building was ready by the next spring. The cost of the lot and building was $18,000, more than half of which was still outstanding, but this was covered in full by subscriptions taken on the day of the dedication. The dedication service was led by Rev. Dennis. Chairs and benches were brought from the old church. Some piled bricks and lumber for seating. The day was overcast and cooler. There were a number of impromtu speeches by visiting ministers including the new Baptist minister, Rev. Guernsey, who spoke well of the unity among the Christians of Coudersport. A choir sang between speeches. The cost of the dinner that followed went toward paying for the new building. A more detailed history that includes the rededication service of March 6, 1994, was compiled by Bob Currin, our church historian. A copy of that history can be obtained by inquiring at the church office.
