About Us:

As home to the renowned Maryland Symphony Orchestra, Washington County Museum of Fine Arts Washington County Arts Council, and The Maryland Theatre, Hagerstown has long enjoyed a rich heritage in the arts. So it should come as no surprise that the Hub City is also home to one of America’s oldest community theater groups, The Potomac Playmakers.

The Hagerstown Women’s Club created the Playmakers in 1926 after a motion by member Mary Lemist Titcomb, a nationally recognized figure made famous for her work with public libraries and the founder of the bookmobile concept. Titcomb felt that a formal theater group would help get the local community involved in the theatrical performances the Women’s Club put on throughout the year. Her hunch was correct. For almost nine decades The Potomac Playmakers have been committed to bringing a broad range of productions to Washington County.
