Princeton Calvary Baptist Church

121 Kentucky Avenue

Lakewood Mission was organized in a little two-room rented house in the Crowtown community on August 27, 1958. Bro Jimmy Ricks, licensed minister from Cadiz, faithfully preached the Word of God to the small congregation. The Church was organized on November 16 1958, under the leadership of Bro. Olan Sisk, of South Union Baptist Church, who served as moderator. Bro Sisk brought the message that day reading from Matthew 16:13-20. The subject of the sermon was '' The Keys to the Kingdom". At the conclusion of the inspiring sermon, a hymn was sang and the hand of fellowship was given in honor of the newly constituted church.

Bro Harold Greenfield of Sugar Creek Baptist Church served as clerk of the organizing council. Others serving on the council were: Shoney Oliver - New Hope, Bernard Watson - Fairview, Cecil Shelton - Sugar Creek, Carter Oliver - Sugar Creek, Robert Randell - Pleasant Hill, Hershel Oxford - Cave-In-Rock,IL, and Cletus Ricks - New Hope. Bro H.D. Knight of Mayfield and Bro Jimmy Ricks were also in attendance. Bro Eunice Oliver dismissed with prayer.

In the spring of 1959 the Church decided to expand and lots were purchased on Kentucky Avenue, just off US 62, the fastest growing section in town. A concrete block, flat roof structure was built with adjacent Sunday School rooms and was dedicated to God as Calvary Baptist Church. Born again believers were baptized in Ward's creek.

Bro H.D. Knight became the first pastor of Calvary Baptist Church. A great step of faith as there were only twenty-six members. Bro Robert Oliver was elected treasurer, Trustees were Luther Oliver and Cordis Teear, and Orbie Tosh was selected as Sunday School Director and church clerk. Herman Oliver served as first Brotherhood President and Anna Sue McGregor served as our first WMU director.

Numerous additions have taken place to the original structure since 1959. New Sunday school rooms, fellowship hall addition, among others. The roof has been raised and the building bricked. Central heat and air has been installed as well. This original building still stands and is used by various Sunday School classes and our Children's Ministry team.

In 1988, under the leadership of Bro J.R. Bruce, a new sanctuary was built. The building committee was headed by Bro Luther Oliver. A cash down payment was made at the beginning of construction, and the building costs of $323,000 was paid in it's entirety in five years.

In 1999, under the leadership of Bro Rodney Wallace, God decided it was time to grow again. Calvary Family Life Center was completed. A 10,500 square foot facility housing staff offices, Sunday school classes, a new youth department, new kitchen, a new fellowship hall and gymnasium. Originally a 15 year note, God had it paid in full in just 6 years. Wow!

Fast forward to 2007. God continues to grow his church. We are building again. Our Children Ministry Team need's more room. A testament to our Lord and the director and staff he has put in place. We will also be building a new sanctuary. God is overflowing our capacity and He has indicated to us it is time to build. We have plans for a 750 seat sanctuary. We also have recently purchased a bus which we use on Sunday mornings to transport children to Sunday School and Children Church. When Church is truly, All about God, his blessings pour out like rain. Is God leading you to be an author in this ongoing history biography?
