Redwood Art Association

603 First Street
707-268-0755

Purpose :

- To support and encourage artists working in the visual arts
- To afford artists a time and place to exhibit their art
- To bring together persons interested in the visual arts

Vision :

The RAA believes that the arts will play an increasingly important role in the future of this area and strongly supports the move to establish a Cultural Arts Center... one that incorporates a visual arts gallery specifically designed for that purpose which would accommodate large exhibits. It would be a community gallery shared by local and traveling exhibits, under the management of an umbrella organization. Participating art organizations would share costs, responsibilities, etc.

The RAA looks forward to being involved in this pursuit and working with the Humboldt Arts Council, county and city entities, other interested art groups and individuals to make the vision of a Cultural Center a reality.

History :

The Redwood Art Association is the oldest nonprofit art association in Humboldt County. It was founded in 1956 by a group of local artists in order to promote visual art in the community. With the continued guidance and support of the RAA, art has flourished on the North Coast, which is now recognized as a major art area.

Through the years the RAA has supported and encouraged beginning artists, sponsored two annual competitive art exhibits, established a scholarship fund at College of the Redwoods, spearheaded the establishment of the first cultural center in Eureka, and promoted community education through lectures and workshops.
