River Forest Elementary School has been a vital part of the Hobart Township community since 1956. RFE services students from New Chicago and Lake Station and also provides services for special needs students from Hobart. We are a blue-collar community consisting of a variety of ethnic backgrounds, and we proudly boast a 90-95% attendance rate at our parent/teacher conferences.

RFE offers a myriad of extra-curriculars for its students and their families. Our full sports program for girls and boys includes softball, basketball, track, and cheerleading. Other after-school opportunities include square-dancing, spell bowl, art fair, newspaper, yearbook, and choir. In addition, sixth graders attend a week-end camp in the fall and participate in the Challenger Space Missions program in the spring.

Our PTA hosts various activities for our families to enjoy. R-Way Skate night, Chuck E. Cheese night, Santa’s Gift Shop, and RFE Fun Fair are just a few examples. Our teachers give our students many authentic learning experiences through field trips to the Northwest Indiana Symphony, Lakeshore Dunes, Buckley Homestead, Pumpkin Patch, local zoos and circuses.
