Rotary Club of Peabody

About Us:

The Peabody Rotary was established in 1920 and is an active part of Rotary International. The Peabody club takes part in local charities and community projects as well participating in regional and international humanitarian projects. (Rotary International is not only the worlds largest private sector provider of scholarships but is inoculating all children throughout the Third World in a battle against the last remaining areas of polio.)

The Peabody Rotary, as one of 31,000 clubs in 166 countries, operates both locally towards it's community goals, and internationally with global concerns. One interesting area where the local and the international interests converge is in the form of the Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarships. This unique one year graduate level complete scholarship is for a student studying in a foreign country. These scholarships are given by each Rotary District and the Peabody Rotary is able to nominate one or more students for this award each year. To qualify the student must not only speak the language of the country where he or she will be studying but be adept at public speaking. The scholarships are given with the understanding that the student will be able to be a personable and effective speaker while studying abroad and be a "good will" ambassador for the US. Upon returning from their studies the student must also be able to speak at each local Rotary District club and report back on conditions in the country where he or she studied.

The Peabody Rotary's local community participation includes such diverse community efforts as the Haven From Hunger, The Babe Ruth League, Citizens For Adequate Housing, Making a Difference in Peabody Foundation, and the Home For Little Wanderers. Please see 'Who we help.' Regionally, we are part of District 7930, a network of 47 clubs located in Eastern Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire. This regional pooling of resources allows us to send at least one student each year for foreign study.

On a lighter note the Peabody Rotary also organizes a Golf Tournament once a year for a scholarship fundraiser, and our annual Taste of The North Shore fundraiser for most of our major programs.  Our district's softball league further rounds out our participation in sports and fellowship with fellow Rotarians.
