About Us

In 1542 Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo sailed up from Mexico to the present state of California looking for a route to Manila. He briefly stopped at what is now San Diego and then a few days later on what is known today as Santa Catalina Island, but which he named San Salvador (Holy Redeemer). There was an Augustinian priest with him, so we can probably assume that mass was celebrated on the island while they were, but we have no written record of that fact.

The recent biography by Harry Kelsey has Cabrillo wintering here and even dying here some months later.

Then in 1602 Sebastian Viscaino, unaware of the previous expedition, sailed up from Mexico and also landed first at what is now San Diego. His second landfall on November 25, was what he named Santa Catalina Island, after St. Catherine of Alexandria, whose feastday it was. There were three Discalced Carmelite priests with him, and we know from their diary that Mass was celebrated here at that time.

Our present parish was established in 1902 and will soon be celebrating it's centennial. When begun it was part of the Diocese of Monterey and Los Angeles.
