Sharon Baptist Church

901 Sharon Road
804-769-2320

In 1775, 12 people organized to form Upper College Church. The founder was Elder John Young. The first Pastor was Elder John Courtney. By 1792, the congregation had grown to a point that Lower College Church was formed, which became the present day Colosse Baptist. By 1810, church membership had grown to 250 members and in 1812 Beulah Baptist was formed. By 1843, the congregation had grown to 445 members. The old chapel was deteriorating and too small. In 1845, using horse drawn wagons, the old Second Baptist Church of Richmond (12th and Main Street) was moved brick by brick to the present location in King William County, VA. Also in 1845, the congregation adopted the name of Sharon Baptist Church.

Around 1871, former slave members of Sharon and Beulah formed Mt. Sinai Church. In the 1920's the Native American members formed Indian View Church. In 1958, a new wing was added to provide educational and fellowship facilities. In 1994, another addition was added, and the old wing was renovated; both to provide additional space and to make the church more handicapped accessible.
