History

We acknowledge the Church of the New Testament. Their strengths, weaknesses and persecutions revealed God’s New Covenant and the world was changed forever.

We acknowledge the Reformation Movement of the 15th and 16th century. Wycliffe, Huss, Tyndale, Luther, Calvin and many others struggled to simply get Bibles in the hands of common people. Tens of thousands died in attempts by the political church to maintain man’s version of religion and traditions most of which were created during the Dark Ages. Even after the printing press, people were not allowed to read the Bible for themselves.

We acknowledge the establishment of the first nation in the world founded on Christian/Bible principals…the United States of America. But even then most Christians in metropolitan areas relied on hierarchy to reveal denominational doctrines and creeds. But we were not oppressed by a STATE/POLITICAL religion. We did have Religious Freedom guarenteed by our constitution!

We acknowledge the Restoration Movement (19th century America) and men like Thomas and his son Alexander Campbell, Barton W. Stone and Walter Scott. Most denominations have been influenced by their simple belief that Christ, the Word and nothing else is our creed. With the help of the Holy Spirit, read it, believe it and do it.

“We have a right to search and interpret the Scriptures for ourselves. A firm conviction that we possess this right is essential to our success. If we doubt our authority to search the Scriptures, we will scarce venture to consult them; or if we do, we will hardly trust ourselves to the conclusions to which they seem to lead us. If we fear that we are invading the province, and transgressing upon the prerogative of the clergy, we can have no confidence either in the teachings of the Scriptures or in ourselves”. - Robert Richardson

There is only one Church and Christ is the head. There are many congregations! We are one congregation of thousands worldwide calling ourselves Christian or Church of Christ. We are truly autonomous without hierarchy or doctrines imposed on us. Our approximate membership of 6 million and missionaries in nearly every part of the world make us one of the fastest growing religious groups in the world.
