Shawnee State Park

4404 State Route 125

Located in the Appalachian foothills near the banks of the Ohio River, 1,095-acre Shawnee State Park is nestled in the 63,000-acre Shawnee State Forest.

Once the hunting grounds of the Shawnee Indians, the region is one of the most picturesque in the state, featuring erosion-carved valleys and wooded hills. The rugged beauty of the area has earned it the nickname "The Little Smokies."

Coming from California I have backpacked/ camped in some of the best places the world has to offer. When I got here I had very low expectations. I started off backpacking mid-day and within the first 6 miles I was humbled. The amazing views and the level of difficulty I had to endure remind me why nature is so beautiful. After settling in to Camp I one of the best campsites I have ever been, I proceeded to fall asleep underneath the stars. The day that followed was absolutely extraordinary. The elevation change was not as rigorous as the first 6 miles and I really got to take time to enjoy the sights. I will say that I don't believe this backpacking Trail is for the faint of heart. If you are not in the best shape take your time and do the trail in the recommended amount of time. For my experienced Backpackers out there this is the best backpacking Trail in all of Ohio and will surpass your expectations.

❣💕💖Love Shawnee State College!! I would recommend to anyone. It is a beautiful setting. Clean and well laid out. Portsmouth is a beautiful town with the river next to it. It is an older town with lovely old buildings.

Went hiking two weeks ago with our troop for our final Philmont practice hike. It was a fairly strenuous hike when you are carrying up to 45 lbs. Being in May, it was very humid as the canopy keep the air from moving. But on top of the ridges it was a welcome relief. I would recommend hiking in the fall, as the colors would be amazing.

We love the extremely informative staff at the Nature Center. We have camped here for over 5 consecutive years and love it.

Very tough hike due to all the up and down on those hills! Beautiful forest and scenery.
