St Peter Lutheran Church

324 East Traer Street
641-816-5531

History:

During the late 1860's and early 1870's there were a number of German speaking Lutherans living in the area of Greene who wished to be near other German speaking people. Their Christian need for baptism, confirmation and Sunday worship brought occasional Lutheran pastors to the vicinity. Pastors of the Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Iowa and other states felt conscience bound to seek to unite the German Lutherans having no church or pastor of their own.

The Church:

1880: The first property was two lots with a house for a parsonage
1884: Congregation purchased a 25 foot lot across from the Parsonage from Lucy Drew for $100.00 where the first church was erected.
1893: Purchased the bell weighing 1000 lbs. for $202.85.
1906: The English language introduced on a Sunday evening.
1914: Old church taken down and the cellar was dug. A new foundation and church were built.
1952: The remodeled church was dedicated on July 20, 1952.
1997: A new building addition was started.

During World War I, German services were disbanded because of the government's 1914 proclamation that prohibited use of the German language for preaching. In January 1919, the congregation decided to have German Services one Sunday and English the next, while chief festivals of the church were in German. On September 24, 1941 the congregation voted to discontinue German services and Christmas Day 1941 was the final German Service with Holy Communion. There was an attendance of 36.

In 1984, Bible School for preschool children was held before school was out. Communion was given twice a month when there were five Sundays in the month. The "Come in Work Clothes" Sunday was introduced and the Lutheran Standard was sent to every home as part of the district dues.

In 1997 the quasquicentennial was celebrated.
