St.James Lutheran Church

History:

frame structure measuring 36 x 60 feet on the northwest corner of Church Road, across Kingsbury Drive from the original structure, on land donated by George Whitebread. The interior of the church was finished in pine and chestnut and had neatly papered walls.

The building committee for the new St. James Church was David White-bread, Daniel Bloss, and William Whitebread. The cost of the building, organ and miscellaneous items were $2,774.11. The total amount of donations to build the church were $2,799.94, and all were collected before the church was dedicated.

The Church Council consisted of two elders, four deacons and three trustees, who were elected by the Congregation. The secretary and treasurer were appointed by the Council. The annual congregational meetings were held on January 1, when male members in good standing were entitled to vote. There were services every other Sunday, all of which were conducted in the English language, except four yearly, which were in German. The Holy Communion was celebrated semi-annually, the preparatory service being held the preceding day. The Communing membership was 135.

In 1987 it was decided to replace the rose-swirl glass windows in the sanctuary. The windows were not weather proof, and allowed cold air and water to leak through. Some of the windows had damage to the woodwork from the elements, so it was decided to purchase stained glass windows to replace them. Thirteen windows were purchased from Shenandoah Glass and installed in the sanctuary, the sacristies, the nursery and the narthex. The windows depict the life of Christ from the announcement to Mary, his birth and baptism to his death and resurrection, beginning with the sacristy to the left facing the altar and continuing around the east wall of the sanctuary, the old narthex, the nursery, the west wall of the sanctuary and back to the sacristy to the right facing the altar. The windows were dedicated on September 20, 1987.

On November 25, 1990, a dedication ceremony was held to dedicate an addition to St. James Church. The Sunday School had grown to over 100 students, teachers, helpers and officers. Movable partitions were purchased but these did not eliminate the noise of so many classes in such a small open setting in the Social Room. It was decided to add a two-story addition in an L-shape to the east side of the building, which includes six Sunday School rooms plus one larger room that can be used as a meeting room as well as a Sunday School room. This room also has two doors so that it can be divided into two classes if necessary. The addition also includes a larger narthex, a church office, a pastor's study, restrooms, a furnace room, a janitor's coset and other storage areas.

A courtyard was also added to the south side of the church. The total cost of the addition was estimated by the architect to be $180,000. The contractor was Ward Andreas, Jr., who was a member of the church, and donated his time and some of the materials. A loan was made through the First National Bank of Berwick for $100,000. By 1998, the loan was paid off and a Mortgage Burning Ceremony was held on November 20th. In 1999 a new roof was placed on the sanctuary section of the building.
