St.Mark Luthern Church

3216 West Main Street
828-459-2161

History

It was on the first Sunday after Trinity, June 13th, 1887, that a group of 60 people gathered to sit on boards laid across stumps in the center of the small town of Claremont, North Carolina and became a charter member of the congregation they called St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church, which remains the legal name of this congregation.

Land on Main Street was purchased from Adolphus and Mary Sigmon and James W. and Pauline Sigmon for the sum of $50. The first church was a white frame building with seperate entrances for males and females, completed in 1892. The congregation was a member of the Lutheran Church - Ohio Synod. Later it became a part of the American Lutheran Church, which in 1988 merged with other Lutheran churches to become the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA.)

In 1924 the congregation voted to build a new church of brick. The new building was dedicated on December 21, 1924. In 1927 the basement was dedicated for Sunday School rooms and on Christmas night, 1929, it was consumed by fire; everything was lost except the pulpit Bible and some wicker furniture. Jacob Sigmon immediately drew up plans for another church and members volunteered countless hours of labor plus materials such as trees for lumber, and the third building, still standing, was built for $40,000 and dedicated on June 22, 1930.
