Support Connection is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization established in 1996 that specializes in free, confidential support services to people affected by breast and ovarian cancer. Our office is located in Yorktown Heights, but we offer support to people all over the country via our toll-free cancer information and support hotline (800-532-4290.) Our mission is to provide emotional, social and educational support services to women, their families and friends affected by breast and ovarian cancer. The support enables women to help each other and empowers them to become their own health care advocates.
Support Connection is about caring. Each person that reaches out for support is given personalized attention in a warm, compassionate atmosphere. It is our goal to assist people so that they make educated decisions about their health care. Once the connection is made, our services span prevention, diagnosis, treatment and recovery. We do not tell people what they need. Rather, we offer multiple resources to help meet their individual needs via a full array of individual and group services.
Breast and ovarian cancer support groups are offered once a month, including groups offered by toll-free teleconference which enable women to be part of a group regardless of where they live, from the comfort of their own homes. In-person support groups are held at various community locations in Westchester, Putnam and Dutchess counties. Groups are led by trained peer facilitators who have experienced breast or ovarian cancer, and focus on topics relating to all stages of diagnosis, treatment and post-treatment. Specialized groups include groups for young women with breast cancer, women with ovarian and gynecological cancers, women experiencing a recurrence of cancer. All support groups are free of charge.
One-on-One Peer Counseling means that anyone seeking information or support speaks directly to a trained counselor who is a survivor of breast or ovarian cancer. Callers receive immediate help during business hours Monday - Friday. After hours-calls are returned the next business day. Counseling is available by phone or in person. Counselors offer information about breast and ovarian cancer, ongoing emotional support, community resources and referrals, connections to other women with similar situations. There are no limits on our peer counseling services. This individualized, free support is available as often as you need it, for as long as you need it, regardless of where you are on your journey through diagnosis, treatment and recovery.
Support Connection offers many other services, all free of charge, which empower women to better cope with recovery and treatment while continuing with their day-to-day lives. There are programs to enhance the quality of life of women living with cancer by focusing on the needs of mind, body and spirit. These include wellness classes (e.g. yoga, meditation and fitness) as well as interactive workshops and educational programs on holistic health, healing, nutrition, and similar topics. Other services include: Free public educational forums about prevention, detection and treatment of breast and ovarian cancer; A lending library; Referrals to other agencies; Community outreach and collaboration with other service providers.
