Messages

Before our Lord left the earth, He commissioned His disciples with a message of saving power. He said in Matthew 28:19-20: "Go ye there and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost; teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen." Mark records our Lord saying: "Go ye into all the world and preach The Gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved, but he that believeth not shall be damned." Luke's record says: "And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem." (Luke 24:47).

It has been said that if Jesus was just ascending to heaven and leaving only twelve disciples as a result of his earthly ministry and each disciple converted one soul a year and each new convert would win one soul in a year's time, and the process continued, a baby that is now in the cradle would be only twenty eight years old when the entire world would be evangelized. What a wonderful thought! Throughout scripture it is clear that we as children of God have an individual responsibility to be soul winners for Jesus our Lord.

In our story in John 4, Jesus was resting at Jacob's Well and began a conversation with a Samaritan woman who had come to draw water. Jesus asked her for water. It's important to point out that Jesus spoke to her (and not the other way around)! This request in our day would not seem unusual, but in Jesus' time it was very unusual. The Samaritan woman asked in verse 9: "How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? For the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans." The only communication that existed between these two groups would have been over the sale of goods. This hatred between Jews and Samaritans went as far back as the times of Jewish exile. This abhorrence and racial prejudice still existed in the time of our Lord. But our Lord went beyond this man-made barrier. Jesus crossed over the social and racial boundaries. Throughout our Lord's Ministry He saw beyond race, age and social status and saw a soul that needed saving.
