"By forming a detachment in Polk County, the Detachment will be offering it's boating safety programs and vessel safety checks to residents. The Auxiliary hopes to improve safe boating awareness among the thousands of boaters using the County 550 lakes and to help reduce the growing number of accidents on county waterways. Polk County has more 158,500 registered vessels and personal watercraft (PWC) and ranks in about the middle of Florida's 67 counties in reportable boating accidents. (Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) 2008 Statistics.) In the Tampa Bay area, more than 500 local Auxiliarists perform underway safety, port security patrols and other duties in support of Coast Guard missions. The Auxiliary is the nation's largest boating safety educator, offering it courses to more than 10,000 boaters annually"
