About Us

Town of Bayfield is central to the pristine forests and lakes of the Bayfield, Wisconsin peninsula. It borders on beautiful Lake Superior and (what we call) Bayfield Country encircles the City of Bayfield. Recently, the City of Bayfield, has been described as the Best Small Town in the Midwest, and serves as a threshold to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore.

The Town covers over 65,000 acres, of which 20,200 are privately owned. Fully 2,782 acres of the Town are in agricultural use. The largest publicly owned tract of land in the Town is the Bayfield County Forest which amounts to 32,632 acres.

Bayfield is well known as farm country and enjoys a unique microclimate perfect for apples and berries. There are numerous orchards and farms in many parts of the Town which market their products to tens of thousands of visitors each year.

The Town of Bayfield is short travel distance from most major population centers in the Midwest. The Twin Cities, of Minneapolis and St. Paul, are within four hours (about 200 miles). In the most recent census (2000), the Town of Bayfield had 625 residents.

Bayfield is a Winter wonderland. The town boasts of the Mt. Ashwabay ski center, many miles of snowmobile and ski trails and great hunting/fishing. These amenities make it attractive to visitors and residents throughout the year.

Several convenient and well-equipped Marinas serve sailors and power boaters. The Apple orchard and berry farm owners help celebrate a popular Apple Festival each Autumn. Winter events include a popular dogsled race. Quaint bed and breakfast lodging and exquisite cuisine, as well as unique entertainment, make any season special in Bayfield.
