Velasco Baptist Church

800 North Avenue F
979-233-2302

We are a Southern Baptist Church. The most recent statement of faith (what we believe) from the Southern Baptist Convention is The 2000 Baptist Faith and Message. Because we are Baptists, we believe in the autonomy of the local church and choose to associate with the Gulf Coast Baptist Association, Southern Baptist of Texas Convention and the Southern Baptist Convention. Our church is made up of members from many different backgrounds and experiences. Because of this and our desire for meaningful membership in a local church, we take member candidates (those whom God is possibly leading to join our family) through what we call our Discovering Membership Class 101. In this class, we discover:

Our Salvation: (What God has done for us)

Our Statement: (Why we exist as a church)

Our Strategy: (How we fulfill our purpose)

Our Structure: (When and where we fulfill our purpose)

We believe this class will go a long way in helping interested people discover what Velasco Baptist Church is all about and where we are going as a church.

Our Motto

Our motto is “Taking Part in the Ministry of Jesus!” We believe that this is why Velasco Baptist Church exists. We fulfill this motto through the five functions of the Church: Worship, Discipleship, Fellowship, Ministry and Evangelism. These five functions are discussed in depth in our Discovering Membership class.

Our Purpose
(Why we exist as a church)

The purpose of our church is summarized in a single sentence based on two key scriptures:

“We believe a GREAT COMMITMENT to the GREAT COMMANDMENT and the GREAT COMMISSION will grow a great church!”

The Great Commandment: “Jesus replied: ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” Matthew 22:37-40

The Great Commission: “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” Matthew 28:19-20
