Virgil I. Grissom Middle School

17000 South 80th Avenue
708-429-3030

Grissom Middle School opened in the Fall of 1975 and operates within a "middle school" format of student ownership by the adult staff. This involves the daily schedule, the building's assignment of instructional areas within interdisciplinary "Teams" and an expanded middle level philosophy evident in the curriculum and among all extracurricular activities.

All students benefit from the curriculum at Grissom. Students who have special needs in exceptional talents or in learning deficits have instruction adapted or curriculum modified to match learning styles and patterns. Special programs are offered to challenge the gifted learner with support for the classroom teacher through resource personnel. A full range of special education delivery options exist to allow maximum in-class time and minimize out-of-class time for students who need academic support. Small group instruction and after-school tutoring are also established for support in the instructional program.

Grissom offers its middle level students an after-school program plan of conference sports, general clubs/activities, and intramural sports, plus an expanded vocal music program through our Patriot Chorus. A complete instrumental music program is also available before school hours to interested students. Both vocal and instrumental music programs are performance-based and extremely active. Technology enters into the range of activities which our students enjoy in many of these activities.

Grissom builds its premise upon a platform of "Patriot Pride" in academics, activities, and athletics. We seek to involve as many students as we can and strive to provide as much support through adults as possible to enhance learning and enrich the daily school experience.
