SERVING THE MATTESON COMMUNITY SINCE 1868
In December, 2009, Zion Lutheran School will celebrate its 141st year in the Matteson community. Zion Lutheran School was started as an outgrowth of Immanuel Lutheran School in Richton Park. The members of Immanuel Lutheran Church decided to start another Lutheran School in Matteson, a growing new community. Matteson, founded in 1855 was only thirteen years old at the time. Our country was healing from the Civil War which had ended only three years earlier.
Zion Lutheran School began in December as a one room school house on 217th Street...At that time the school classes were taught by the pastor. As Zion Lutheran School continued to grow, it called its first full time teacher in 1931. Plans were initiated to build a new school. Dedication of this new building took place in 1944 and expanded the school to a two room school house with a kindergarten. Zion's kindergarten was the first in the village of Matteson.
The current school building which was built around the existing two room school house was the result of two building programs. In 1961 the new church, offices, and four new classrooms were added. A gym, kitchen, and additional rooms were added in 1984. Zion continues to grow and utilizes all of its spaces. Most recently, a computer lab was established.
Zion Lutheran School offers a preschool through eighth grade program. Zion, like other Lutheran Schools, provides a unique foundation which encompasses more that academics. Parents can expect nothing less that the highest quality Christian education for their child and love and concern for themselves.
Zion's curriculum is based on the Illinois Learning Standards, with strong attention to individual needs in order to achieve academic excellence. Zion has received National Lutheran School Accreditation and North Central Accreditation. Zion's membership in these organizations indicates a commitment to quality education and continual improvement. Our school is also recognized by the State of Illinois.
There have been many changes since that first school year in 1868, but Zion continues to serve the children in the Matteson community. It still has its two pronged purpose: to provide religious education in a loving Christian environment and quality education with high standards.
