Immanuel Hall

302 S. Grant
Hinsdale IL 60521

Description:
Throughout Hinsdale’s history, village residents have willingly given of themselves to fill community needs. Over one hundred years ago, it was this community spirit that built Immanuel Hall. German immigrants, the talented craftsmen who built most of the village’s homes and businesses, once occupied much of west Hinsdale. Recognizing a need in their own neighborhood, they volunteered the necessary labor and expertise to build Immanuel Hall. . . a simple, Gothic-style frame church. Until recently, the property was used as a private school. The sale of the site meant that the former church would be demolished and another irreplaceable piece of Hinsdale’s history would be lost. For months, the Hinsdale Historical Society, Hinsdale’s Board of Trustees and residents labored persistently to find a way to preserve this historic building. Finally, with the help of a substantial grant from the State of Illinois, the Village of Hinsdale purchased the property. The Village has since deeded the site to the Historical Society. The Society plans to operate Immanuel Hall for its own use and that of the public, making it available for meetings, classes and exhibitions, performing arts programs and receptions. Immanuel Hall continues to stand, telling the story of Hinsdale’s spirit and community. As our village redevelops, the site offers a window to our past, its variety and tradition. With the renovation of Immanuel Hall, we preserve our history and honor this heritage.
