Curtis was established as a "railroad town" for the Burlington Railroad. The first tracks were laid in Curtis on October 6, 1885. The first regular passenger train reached Curtis September 15, 1886; although it wasn't incorporated into a village until January of 1887.
The Diamond Jubilee, a yearly celebration established in 1887, took place mid-September to celebrate the birthdate of the town and the anniversary of the railroad. Eventually, the festival transitioned into Curtis Fall Festival.
Curtis Fall Festival continues the annual tradition of a mid-September city-wide celebration: the third weekend of September.
