Government and Politics

From: City of Belmont

First-Ever Elected Female Mayor in City's History

In its first meeting after election results were certified, the City of Belmont congratulates its first-ever, elected At-large Mayor Julia Mates, and welcomes its two newest councilmembers Gina Latimerlo and Robin Pang-Maganaris.

The election of Mayor Mates marks the first time in the Peninsula city’s almost 100 years that a mayor was elected instead of appointed. Her historical mayorship also sets a milestone in the City’s history as the first-ever elected female of Chinese and Jewish heritage. She will serve a two-year term, also a first for Belmont.

The City’s newest councilmembers were elected by their districts to represent the City on the five-member council. Councilmember Gina Latimerlo is a music teacher in District 1 and Councilmember Robin Pang-Maganaris is a retired educator in District 3. Both will serve a four-year term.

At the meeting, the council selected Davina Hurt as vice mayor until December 2023. The council thanked former Vice Mayor Tom McCune for his leadership in 2022; his term will end in 2024.

Belmont also recognized departing Councilmember Charles Stone, and the City’s longest serving Councilmember Warren Lieberman for their dedication to Belmont.
