A Virtual Field Trip to the Library - Behind the Scenes!

Let’s talk about the process!

Have you ever wanted to pull back the curtain and see the inner workings of your local library? Time for a virtual field trip!

First things first, how do we choose which books to buy? We have several tools we use to help us pick. The most popular trade journals like Publisher’s Weekly and Library Journal have new release information, book reviews, and more! Our Collection Development Policy is on our website and explains what criteria our librarians use for selection.

The main vendor we use is Ingram, where we can organize shopping carts by month and make sure all our invoices are in order. Once we receive the boxes, we can really get started!

After we unbox the books, it’s time to put their barcodes, branch stickers, and ownership stickers in. Then they go on a “work shelf” while they’re cataloged – which is a lot more complicated than you might think! But our librarians are experts.

They get their spine labels, and they’re almost ready to hit the shelves! But we have to check them in first, so we know where to send them. Each branch has its own labeled bins, and our courier takes the books to their home branch – or to the branch where someone has a hold on the book! – every weekday.

And that’s how we do it! Browse our newly added books here, and make sure you have a crack at all the great titles ready to go into circulation!
