Mayor William E. Cooper officially declared June 19 as a holiday in the City of Enterprise, joining the federal government in recognizing Juneteenth, which commemorates the Thirteenth Amendment abolishing slavery. Although the amendment was passed in 1863, slavery continued in the South through the end of the Civil War on April 9, 1865. Juneteenth, also known as Emancipation Day, represents June 19, 1865 - the day the last of the enslaved people received word that the North had won the war and consequently had won their freedom. Joining Cooper in recognizing the new Juneteenth federal and City holiday, which was observed on June 20, were,  seated left of Mayor Cooper, Peggy Contreras, and seated right, Shana Demby; standing from left, Cynthia Adams, Summer Warren and Shelia Harris.
