Costco to Host Book Signing for Local Southside Place Author

In 1924, Edward Lilo Crain platted Southside Place, a 329-lot subdivision on the soggy prairie just west of bustling downtown Houston. Ahead of his time, Crain combined the roles of real estate investor, developer, and builder, establishing Southside Place with prefabricated catalog homes. The neighborhood's most defining attribute, however, is the 1.5-acre park Crain created as its geographic and civic center. This thoughtful early attempt at city planning made Southside Place the first Houston subdivision to provide a swimming pool, tennis court, clubhouse, and park for the private use of residents. The majority of images in this book are from the generous contributions of current and former residents, the City of Southside Place, and the authors' private collections.

Highlights of Southside Place include:

·         The authors' collection of images documents the unique progression of housing styles and trends over the past 90 years.  The subdivision has evolved from quaint 1,500 square foot bungalows, to homes of every architectural style in excess of 5,000 square feet. While $8,000 could buy a new home in Southside Place in 1924, today newly constructed homes sell for more than $1 million and often in excess of $2 million.

·         The US War Administration owned property at 4001 Bellaire Boulevard for the National Instrument Corporation to operate a binocular manufacturing facility where Southside Place women and teens worked during World War II.

·         A young Southside Place paratrooper killed during World War II was part of the infamous "E Company" immortalized in the book and mini-series Band of Brothers.
