Virtual Lecture - Maryland's Four Signers

Tuesday, June 28

Four Marylanders—William Paca, Samuel Chase, Charles Carroll of Carrollton, and Thomas Stone—were among the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776, and each of them lived in Annapolis at one time or another. Huzzah for Glenn Campbell!

We are both pleased and sad to share that Glenn Campbell, HA's esteemed Senior Historian, will be retiring from his position at Historic Annapolis at the end of June. Glenn has dedicated over 25 years to Historic Annapolis, and has been instrumental in so many ways to our organization's success - from the creation and development of highly-acclaimed exhibitions, to presenting sold-out lectures (virtual and in-person!), to developing engaging walking tours, and even more achievements that are too many to count. Glenn was recently recognized by both the State and the City for his long-standing contributions to to our organization, and received the Heritage Leadership Award in 2021 from Chesapeake Crossroads Heritage Area. Glenn is a well-respected researcher and historian, known for his ability to make Annapolis's history come alive. We hope you will join HA in wishing him well on his new adventures!

(And don't worry - Glenn is not leaving the history field completely - so we promise it won't be the last you hear of him collaborating with HA!)

Virtual Lecture - The Hessians are Coming: Mercenary Soldiers and the American Revolution

Tuesday, July 5

The British government dispatched about 20,000 German troops help the redcoats to put down the revolt in America. This lecture by Dr. Richard Bell surveys these Hessian mercenaries’ contributions to the British war machine, including their efforts to sweep Washington’s army out of New York City and back to New Jersey. It also reveals how and why ordinary Americans’ perception of them as thugs capable of ‘ungovernable brutality’ changed—so much so that when the war finally ended, almost 6,000 German veterans chose to put down roots, betting their futures on the prospects of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness in the newly formed United States.

Registration required.
