Helping Our Women - Community Update - June 30, 2022

Clubs and Organizations

July 1, 2022

From: Helping Our Women

Greetings Jim,

There's alot happening in our world and here at HOW as we prepare for our Annual Meeting, our Summer Party & Auction, community events, and....the BIG NEWS we'll be announcing at the Annual Meeting!

We're gathering today, Thursday June 30th, from 5:30-7pm at the Provincetown Inn for the Board's Annual Meeting where we will honor Ann Maguire with the 2022 Betty Villari Community Service Award -- and share exciting news about HOW's growth in the coming months! If you can't join us, then keep your eye on our social media channels or look for a July email update.

Please note, that Ann will be joining the Annual Meeting virtually, and attendees will have an opportunity to congratulate Ann in 1:1 conversations at the end of the award ceremony. We are not able to offer a virtual meeting room for other attendees, but we hope you'll come to honor her work in Provincetown and on the Cape. Provincetown Board of Selectmen have issued a proclamation designating today, June 30, 2022, as Ann Maguire Day in Provincetown, so come on down to the Provincetown Inn and celebrate!

If you're on the Cape in the coming weeks, I hope you'll join us at one of the events and gatherings highlighted below. And if you're in Wellfleet on July 4th, look for a few of us in the parade!

If you can't join in person, be sure to check out our on-line auction that starts on Tuesday July 19 and ends Friday July 22 at 12pm. We'll be uploading the fun and fabulous items our supporters have generously donated including: Provincetown get-aways, dinners out, art from one of your favorite galleries, and more!

Finally, if you haven't had a chance to read my response to the Supreme Court majority decision in Dobbs v. Jackson, please take a few minutes to read it because it's as much about HOW, our mission, and you, the HOW community, as it is about the actual decision. -Gwynne

“It’s hard to ask for the help, but HOW makes it easy.”

You did it! We raised $30,000 in our spring appeal thanks to your generous response to one donor's challenge gift of $15K!

You responded to Janine's story with generosity, and each gift, whether it was $10 or $1,000 will make a difference in the lives of women like Janine.

“I walk in the door and feel welcome. I like that I go home with a bag of goodies. There’s something very nurturing about walking in the door at HOW.”

-Janine, Provincetown artist, HOW client member, volunteer, & donor

Your generosity continued with donations to our Personal Pantry Drive in late May and early June

Thanks to b\well's team for donating their tips for the week, as well as the patrons at the Eastham and Truro libraries we raised over $2,500, along with plenty of personal care products to help offset the economic burden of living with a chronic or serious health condition. Thank you!

Ella Anderson, our Client Services Manager, met some of you when dropping donations on Commercial Street at our pantry drive partner and sponsor, b\well, over Memorial Day weekend.

Community Wellness Programs

HOW hosted a Community Drum Circle at Preservation Hall in Wellfleet on Tuesdays in June.
We had a great turn-out and ALOT of fun with this program that promotes social connection along with the health benefits that come from drumming. There's demand for another series, so we'll be offering this program again in the fall. Thanks to our Americorps VISTA volunteer, Elise Huang for taking the initiative to identify, plan, and execute this new program.

Elise's year of service ends in late August and we'll really miss her!

If you or someone you know is interested in volunteering for a year of service with HOW thru Americorps VISTA, then give us a call. It's a 35 hour/week commitment and participants receive a daily living stipend, along with a tuition award (or cash award) at the end of the year, as well as a small stipend from HOW -- approximately $1,800/month total renumeration.

Community Partnership Highlight Summer Salon Series with Cape Cod Institute

Much of my professional development since moving home to the Cape in 2004 has been at the Cape Cod Institute and I'm especially pleased that Flint Sparks, PhD has agreed to offer a talk in Provincetown next week. He's the real deal and a speaker/teacher whom I always want to hear more from because his insights instill me with renewed resilience. I hope you'll join us! Thanks to our community partner Cape Cod Institute for their support co-hosting this event.

Tickets on-sale now

We sold out early last year so don't wait too long to get your seat!

We are still accepting donations, so fill out the form on the event website or call our office if you want to donate an item or gift certificate.

We'll be adding items to the auction website in the coming week, so keep checking back!
