Get a much-needed dose of spring and come learn about new garden trends, plants and techniques at the McHenry County Gardenfest, a day-long series of garden-related seminars and workshops.

Gardenfest 2017 will be held April 8 at McHenry County College (MCC), 8900 U.S. Route 14, in Crystal Lake, Ill., from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Gardenfest is an annual educational event co-sponsored by MCC and the University of Illinois Extension McHenry County Master Gardeners. More than 30 breakout sessions presented by industry experts, U of I Extension educators, master gardeners and MCC instructors will cover a myriad of gardening topics. In addition, dozens of exhibitors will be onsite selling books and garden-related products and demonstrating their crafts.

The keynote speaker is nationally renowned gardening expert, TV/radio host, author and columnist Melinda Myers, who will speak on "Garden Renovations for Any Size Landscape." Myers has more than 30 years of horticulture experience, has written more than 20 gardening books and has appeared at major flower shows and home and garden events throughout the country. She has a master's degree in horticulture, is a certified arborist and was a horticulture instructor with tenure.

Other Gardenfest topics will include how to control garden pests and diseases, dormant deciduous tree identification, cooking with herbs, native plant landscaping, new plants, organic gardening and garden design.

Gardenfest boasts more than 30 breakout sessions offered in four segments. Each segment lasts an hour and 15 minutes. Lunch will be served midday in the MCC cafeteria. Attendees are eligible for door prizes.

Registration forms are available online at mchenry.edu/gardenfest. Registration begins Feb. 13, and the cost is $45. Space is limited, so register early. The registration deadline is March 28.
