PSC Founder and Artistic Director Guy Roberts has received the first inaugural Sidney Berger Award from the Shakespeare Theatre Association (STA). The "Sidney" Award was announced and presented by STA President Jeffrey Watkins on January 25, 2014 at the Stratford Festival in Stratford, Ontario at the annual STA conference.

Endowed and created by Sandra Berger and the Berger Estate, the Sidney Berger Award celebrates mid-career Artistic Directors of Shakespeare Theatres throughout the world and honors the legacy of Sidney Berger, founder of the Houston Shakespeare Festival and co-founder of the Shakespeare Theatre Association.

Sandra Berger says, "People were suggesting various ways to memorialize Sidney and still are. But it seemed to me that I wanted to honor all the things he was and loved. I wanted to create an award given to someone who embodied many of those same gifts - a lover of Shakespeare, an accomplished actor and director, artistic director and producer, an innovator and charismatic leader. As I listed these attributes it dawned on me I knew another such person: Guy Roberts. I want all those gifts, struggles and accomplishments to be acknowledged. I know Sidney would be/is so pleased that Guy Roberts is the first recipient of the "Sidney." Guy is a dreamer, a visionary, and a great talent and has accomplished so much deserving of recognition. STA was Sidney's dream and the logical home for such an award and celebration by his peers. As long as there are spirits like Guy Roberts a little of Sidney lives on and all of us are enriched."

Of receiving the Sidney, Guy Roberts says, "Sidney Berger transformed the lives of thousands of people as the Founder and Artistic Director of the Houston Shakespeare Festival, the head of the University of Houston's Theatre Department, co-founder of the Shakespeare Theatre Association and as an inspirational actor, director, teacher and leader. He was a visionary who believed in the redemptive power of Shakespeare. The graciousness and generosity he displayed towards me is something I shall long remember. Sidney trained and created an entire generation of professional theatre artists, brought the City of Houston an unparalleled tradition of excellence and enriched the lives of literally thousands and thousands of artists, audiences, students and educators alike. I am deeply honored and forever grateful for this recognition from Sandra Berger and the Berger Estate as well as the Shakespeare Theatre Association. One thing we can all agree on about Sidney is "he was a man, take him for all in all, we shall not look on his like again."

Founded in 1991 by Sidney Berger and Douglas Cook, the Shakespeare Theatre Association (STA) serves artistic, education, and management leaders of theatres whose primary focus is producing the works of William Shakespeare. It offers these leaders a forum that enables them to discuss issues and methods of work, to share resources and information, and to act as advocates for Shakespearean productions and training. STA is an international membership organization that includes over one-hundred and twenty (120) theaters and festivals from around the world, representing diverse types (indoor, outdoor, year-round, seasonal, university-affiliated, free) with wide ranging annual budgets (US $25,000 to US $60,000,000). More information can be found on the STA website:
