Apple Valley, CA — On November 8th, marked the 9th annual Mayor’s Youth Leadership Summit. The event was designed to give our students a look inside local government by participating in a day of open discussions, hands-on workshops, and active networking with Mayor Nassif, Town Council and Town staff.

“We are grateful for the dedication and enthusiasm shown by all the students who participated in this year’s Mayor’s Youth Leadership Summit. I am continuously inspired by our students, and I look forward to hearing their ideas every year." said Mayor Scott Nassif.

Launched in 2014 by then Mayor Art Bishop, MYLS has grown in popularity with students vying for an opportunity to participate. This year’s event included students from the Academy for Academic Excellence, Apple Valley High School, Granite Hills High School, Apple Valley Christian School, and High Desert Premier Academy.

“MYLS was an extraordinary and fun experience. I loved getting to work with local government, learning key factors of how it runs and what is needed for certain positions.” – Simon Skinner, AAE Junior and member of the mock council.

The students were divided into five teams that worked with Town staff on a project proposal not to exceed $2,500 in funding. Students then presented the projects to their peers on the mock council for a vote to be considered for funding by the real Town Council later this year.

Students represented a variety of departments proposing a free license campaign, free first aid kits for the community, game nights for senior citizens and care kits for the homeless. Ultimately, students voted to fund a swim lesson program in the Park and Recreation Department for low-income and at-risk youth.

Those same students now have the opportunity to present to council to be considered for actual funding by Apple Valley Town Council at its December 12th meeting. If funded, interested students from every school are invited back to be a part of making their project a reality by working with Department staff to execute the project in the community.
