About Castine Historical Society
The Castine Historical Society is dedicated to collecting and preserving information and materials related to the history of the Castine-Bagaduce River area. In 1994 the Society demonstrated the commitment to its mission by purchasing and restoring the Abbott School on the Castine town common. On May 30, 2007 the final major phase of the Abbott School's renovation was completed when the restored, copper-topped cupola was replaced upon the reshingled roof. The fully restored building, itself a significant contribution to the community's history, is the Society's permanent home and site of annual exhibits and events.
The Society's multi-media permanent exhibit is devoted to the ill-fated Penobscot Expedition, one of the worst naval defeats in American history, which took place in and around Castine during the summer of 1779. In terms of content and technology, it is the most comprehensive exhibit of the Revolutionary War disaster ever undertaken.
A 501 (C)(3) organization, the energy and dedication of a large number of volunteers keep the Society active. New and returning members are always welcome. One method of demonstrating interest in and support for the mission of the Society is the purchase of a personalized brick for the walkways at the Abbott School.
