History

Horrall School was named after Albion H. Horrall, a former superintendent of the San Mateo City School District. Mr. Horrall assumed his duties as superintendent on May 1,1941. As former assistant superintendent of the San Jose School District, he achieved national recognition with his book, Let's Go To School. The volume was widely used by educational institutions and teacher training schools throughout the nation. Mr. Horrall was recognized as one of the leading educatorsof the state, and received many honors for his contributions to public education.

Mr. Horrall was a member of the State Curriculum Commission for over twelve years. He received his A.B. from Washington State and a M.A. from Stanford. He also served on the faculty of San Jose State College. A civic-minded citizen, Mr. Horrall held offices in the Crippled Children's Society and on the San Mateo City Library Board. He and his wife lent their musical talents to entertaining the troops during World War II. Mr. Horrall died on July 16,1946, after an extended illness.

Horrall Dedication Ceremony

At the flag raising ceremony, dedication program, and open house at the new Horrall School yesterday, a promise made in 1949 by the Newbridge Realty Company to residents of South Shoreview was finally realized.

Frank Hefferman of the Newbridge Realty company said that much credit was due to Walter A. Jack, superintendent of schools, for his untiring efforts.

Billy Atkins of Boy Scout Troop 31 and Patricia Gillespie of Girl Scout Troop 225 raised the flag for the first time over their school while Cub Scouts pack 131, Brownies Troop 197, and other members of Boy Scout Troop 31 and Girl Scout Troop 225 stood at attention.
