Out North Contemporary Art House
Our Mission:
To produce and present art that challenges and inspires; to nurture creative space where people of all cultures, generations, circumstances and abilities can gather and learn; to champion artists whose work pushes traditional boundaries of aesthetics and content.
Our Work:
Out North is a progressive multi-arts organization offering a vibrant mix of contemporary visual, performing, literary and media art and engaging in arts activism, human rights, community development and life-long education.
Now in our 27th season, Out North presents, produces and promotes art of all genres and forms and embraces art making that tackles challenging subject matter. We bring national artists to Anchorage and foster local artists and art resident groups in developing new work. We believe in providing arts and culture opportunities to everyone, particularly those marginalized because of identity or circumstance. Our facility includes a black box theater, two galleries and gathering spaces for readings, plays, performance art, dance, music, new media and collaborations.
Our History:
Gene Dugan and Jay Brause founded Out North in 1985 as a way to present LGBTQ theater productions. The organization expanded to general programming by the early 1990s, always nourishing art making and creating cultural opportunities. The founders ushered the organization through over two decades of programming that included the work of Karen Finley and Tim Miller (two of the NEA 4) and national and international artists like Guillermo Gómez-Peña, Silvana Straw and Juan Ybarra.
Out North further develops, produces and presents local work, including plays, visual art, literature, music, film, performance art and theater. In 2011, Out North built a partnership with 12 mission-focused art groups in its Art House Residency Program.
Out North owes its it rich legacy to its founding principal of creating a space, aesthetic and social and political perspective that fosters art by and for people marginalized, unheard, unrepresented, under-resourced.
Out North was recognized in the 2011 ACLU of Alaska 40th Anniversary Liberty Awards: One of 40 Heroes of Constitutional Rights. It also received a 2010 Visionary Award from Hope Community Resources and a 2010 Star Award from Anchorage School Business Parnerships for its work with McLaughlin School.
Out North has received the Governor's Award for the Arts in recognition of ongoing successes in creating and connecting art with the community to challenge conventional notions of what constitutes contemporary culture and in maintaining an artist-focused platform for underserved artists, art forms and audiences.
The Alaska Legislature has also commended Out North for the leadership role it plays in promoting the artistic, economic, educational and cultural development of our communities.
