About Dr. Bachman Dr. Kathryn S. Bachman has always loved science and cared about helping others. But she didn’t discover her passion for medicine until her junior year of college while studying abroad in Peru. “I spent part of the term with a physician and his family, and I fell in love with the art and science of medicine.” Dr. Bachman uses her passion for helping others in family practice. There, she goes beyond medicine with her empathy and forms deeper connections with her patients to work together to treat a wide variety of acute and chronic conditions. “I love family medicine because of the chance to build long-term relationships with patients, their families and the community. I believe high quality and empathetic primary care – and family medicine in particular – is the best way to provide health care.” Dr. Bachman earned her medical degree at Des Moines University. She completed her Family Medicine Residency at the Community Health Network in Indianapolis. But the greatest lesson came from her patients. “Humans are resilient,” she says. “I’m constantly amazed at the obstacles people overcome, and I feel very privileged to sit with and stand witness to the moments of both difficulty and triumph.” This respect for human resilience and well-being shapes Dr. Bachman’s practice philosophy – and inspired her to join Beacon. “I think that medicine should be not-for-profit and that health care systems should serve the community that they are in,” says Dr. Bachman. “I want to work with people who are committed to serving patients and the community, and I felt that when I met with Beacon providers.” In Her Own Words Who is or was the most influential person/role model in your life? My grandma Fern. She embodied hospitality and service to others and greatly impacted my life. What was your first job growing up? What do you remember about it?  I was a cashier at Sears during the holiday season when I was in high school. What are your hobbies, interests? Playing and watching sports – particularly the Seattle Seahawks and Oregon Ducks, cooking and baking, playing the piano, singing, traveling and anything outdoors. If you could sit down to dinner with anyone, alive or deceased, who would it be and why? My grandma Fern. She passed before my children were born, and I would love to introduce her to them. In addition to medicine, what are you passionate about?  I love to cook, and baking is a favorite hobby of mine. I especially like baking cakes. Hiking, camping and spending time outdoors are all things I really enjoy, and I hope to be able to travel as soon as the pandemic improves. My favorite activity at the moment, though, is taking my kiddos on adventures and exploring the world with them.
