Dr. Louis Gerena is a non-surgical orthopaedic and sports medicine physician. He specializes in diagnosing and managing musculoskeletal and sports injuries including fractures, sprains, arthritis, tendon injuries, and exercise-related illnesses. Dr. Gerena treats these issues with medications, injections, physical therapy, bracing, and other options. He is trained in performing ultrasound-guided injections including cortisone, biologics such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP), and prolotherapy. Dr. Gerena received his medical degree from Florida State University College of Medicine. He completed his family medicine training at the Trident/MUSC Family Medicine Residency Program in Charleston, South Carolina, where he was a team doctor for the James Island Charter High School. At his residency graduation, he was awarded the title of "Resident Teacher of the Year." He went on to receive his certification in Primary Care Sports Medicine at Andrews Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center in Birmingham, Alabama, founded by the world-renown surgeon Dr. James Andrews. During his fellowship, he was the team physician for Briarwood Christian High School, the University of West Alabama, and Birmingham-Southern College and cared for athletes at the University of Alabama monthly. Dr. Gerena is currently the team physician for the South Carolina Stingrays, Charleston Riverdogs, and the College of Charleston. He is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine.
