About Melissa Melissa Turner was inspired to become a nurse because of her relatives, but she was inspired to become a physician assistant because of her experiences. “My mom and several of my aunts are nurses,” she says. “I went to school to become a labor and delivery nurse, but ended up working in the ICU instead.” This is where she collaborated with cardiothoracic physician assistants and discovered her passion. “I thought their job was very interesting,” she says. Being able to provide an advanced level of care during such stressful times for patients became her calling. Melissa earned her master’s degree in physician assistant studies at Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis. As a cardiothoracic surgery physician assistant, Melissa cares for patients before, during and after surgery. “I’ve worked at Elkhart General since 2005.  I respect the physicians, nurses and all members of the health care team.” Her education and clinical experiences have shaped her practice philosophy. “Treat every patient as you would want your parents or grandparents treated.” This mindset helps Melissa provide exceptional, compassionate care to each and every patient. In her own words Who is or was the most influential person/role model in your life?  My parents. They worked hard all their lives and are now enjoying retirement and traveling all over – a goal I strive for! What was your first job growing up? What do you remember about it?  I worked in the movie theater concession stand. I got to see movies for free and came home smelling like popcorn every night. What are your hobbies, interests?  I love to read and look forward to reading more when I can. I would also love to take tennis lessons. If you could sit down to dinner with anyone, alive or deceased, who would it be and why?  My grandfathers. One passed away when I was four, and the other was very quiet. I never took the time to get to know him. In addition to medicine, what are you passionate about?  My two kids, Jacob and Elyse, and my family.
