For Muhammad Ahsan Saeed, MD, FACP the inspiration to embark on a career in medicine came from his father’s example. “He was a tireless caregiver for my grandfather. He inculcated the importance of compassion and dependability in me as a kid,” Dr. Saeed explains. “Sometime during my teen years, while looking at my father’s dedication, being a caregiver became my passion and I journeyed on to my career in medicine.” He chose pulmonology because “it requires critical attention and at the same time the compassionate ‘do no harm’ aspect necessitates thoughtful steps; this forms the basis of pulmonary and critical care medicine. This duality drives my passion for the specialty.” He chose Beacon for “the opportunity that comes with working in such an established regional center.” When it comes to caring for his patients, Dr. Saeed believes in compassion and a strong work ethic, coupled with a team-based approach and a desire for excellence. “Over the years, my patients have taught me a great deal, but most importantly I’ve learned vulnerability as a human and the fighting spirit that connects all of us as one tribe.” As for his philosophy, he believes that knowledge is power. “I hope I can help my patients better understand their disease and how to come to rational conclusions to manage it together as a team.” In his own words… Who is or was the most influential person/role model in your life? My father: Javeed Sheikh. What was your first job growing up? What do you remember about it? I was a high school debating coach. I remember the team spirit and how far encouragement can take people. What is your favorite Movie? What was your favorite subject in school growing up? My favorite movie is 12 Angry Men. English Literature was my best subject. If you could sit down to dinner with anyone (alive or deceased) who would it be and why? My father. To tell him where I have reached following his footsteps and to learn more wisdom from him. In addition to medicine, what are you passionate about? What are your hobbies, interests? Reading books, writing and motivating my friends. What is something most people don’t know about you? I am an avid soccer player and played for my college and local club as a teenager.
