Born and raised in South Africa, Dr. Nixon moved to the United States with his family at the age of 14. He attended high school in Huntsville, Alabama, and later graduated from the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Earning a medical degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Medicine, Dr. Nixon received additional training in ophthalmology while studying in Zurich, Switzerland, before completing his internship at the Baptist Medical Center in Birmingham. His ophthalmology residency program was held at the renowned Callahan Eye Foundation Hospital in Birmingham, one of the nation’s leading facilities for treating traumatic eye injuries. Dr. Nixon went on to complete a two-year vitreoretinal surgery fellowship at the Retina Consultants of Alabama, UAB Department of Ophthalmology at the Callahan Eye Foundation Hospital. Dr. Nixon specializes in the management of all diseases of the retina, vitreous and macula. His clinical expertise includes the diagnosis and treatment of macular degeneration, retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy and macular holes. He has also served as a clinical investigator for research trials studying new treatments for vitreoretinal disease. Dr. Nixon has numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals, such as the American Journal of Ophthalmology and the American Journal of Medicine. In addition he has presented research studies at international meetings, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Retinal Specialists / European Vitreoretinal Society Joint Meeting, and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. He maintains professional membership in the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Retina Specialists, Texas Medical Association, Austin Ophthalmological Society, and the Travis County Medical Society. Dr. Nixon further serves the Austin community through patient education seminars and lectures on the diagnosis and management of vitreoretinal diseases. Abroad, he has volunteered in Nicaragua teaching resident surgeons and assisting in the surgical care of adults and children. In his free time, Dr. Nixon enjoys automobile racing, cycling, running, swimming and competing in triathlons.
