Community Vision And Guiding Principles

Vision Statement:

Smithville—a BIG small town linked by natural stream corridors. We are a growing, full service community for all ages: high quality, fiscally responsible and connected.

This Vision Statement grew out of the Economic Development Committee’s Mission Statement and was discussed and refined over two workshops in the summer and fall of 2004.

Guiding Principles:

The Guiding Principles were developed and refined in the same workshops as the Vision Statement.

Neighborhoods & Natural Resources

Smithville should be a full-service community that maintains its small town atmosphere for a diverse population consisting of neighborhoods designed
for human interaction.

All existing and future residential, non-residential and mixed-use neighborhoods in Smithville should be designed with attention to the preservation and maintenance of significant natural resources and stream corridors. These serve as areas of recreation, ecological conservation and natural stormwater treatment. At the same time, the unique character of the community is protected through a natural network incorporating hiking, biking, and walking trails, parkways and parks.

Smithville’s neighborhoods should be developed and built with the intent to create a secure, unique place of enduring quality for future generations. Smithville will develop a strong sense of place to reinforce favorable community identity through identification of “character areas” such as Downtown.
